Madekwe was raised by a mixed ethnic family. She is English, and her father is Nigerian. She was born in the southern part of London Council Estate and went to The Brit School aged 14. At the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art is where she earned an acting BA. She performed in various performances on stage during her college days, such as King Henry V and Wuthering Heights.

Madekwe's US debut was in 2009 when she appeared on her dramatic The Beautiful Life. The show aired just two episodes before being ended on The CW. Ashley Leggat, a twice Gemini nominated actress was raised in a big family in Hamilton, Ontario. She was raised by her parents Roy and Patty as well as four of their older brothers: Brett, Todd and Bram twins, Rob, and Brett. Ashley grew in arenas or baseball fields because her brothers, who were all athletic, were hockey players, baseball players, and both in the spring and summer.
